She Sells Sea Shells by the Seashore—-say that 5 times fast. 🙂 I may not be selling sea shells by the seashore, but I am incorporating beautiful shells into some of my jewelry.
While visiting San Marco Island in FL, I discovered some extremely unusual shells. Many of them are varied shades of pink which are sometimes combined with white or gray. Some of them are totally pink, or shades of gray or even almost black. I spent hours walking on the beach looking for the most beautiful ones and wound up bringing home quite a few. (and that is an understatement!)
When I say I spent hours looking for shells, I’m not exaggerating at all. One evening I was out scouring the beach for just the right shells, completely focused on the gorgeous shells laying on the beach when a young man approached me. He said “Mam, could please move further down the beach a bit, we’re trying to take some pictures. When I looked up I was very embarrassed to see that there was an entire wedding party having their pictures taken and apparently they didn’t want a middle-aged beachcomber in a big floppy beach hat in the back drop of their wedding photos. (I guess I was a bit TOO focused on the shells. 🙂 )
I carried the shells home on the airplane, cleaned them and have recently prepared them to be used in my jewelry. I’ve coated the shells with a special jewelry sealant which made the colors even more vibrant and will ensure that they will retain their beauty.
I’ve made necklaces and earrings as well as bookmarks. (and yes, even book ‘thongs’). They make perfect accent for when you’re at the beach or even if you’re just wishing you were there. Who knows, maybe if you wear them around the house it will give your family the ‘hint’ that it’s time for a trip to your favorite beach.
These pieces add a bit of lighthearted fun to your jewelry collection. If interested in seeing a few of my shell designs, just click on the link below. If you live near me, you are welcome to come and see ALL of the shells and design your own unique beach jewelry.
