I have always enjoyed reading.  I have read various kinds of books, but one of my favorite thing to read is a good murder mystery.  Making jewelry all day keeps my hands busy, but at times I have found the need to keep my mind occupied as well.  I tried watching movies on my computer, but that is difficult and frustrating since I need to keep my eyes on my work.  Well, I have found the answer—–books online.  🙂

Since discovering Audible.com I have devoured MANY books over the last few months.  It has been a true gift to be able to enter in to another world while I’m working.  I love beginning my day by laying out the designs I want to make that day and then turning on whatever book I may be listening to at that time. I’ve listened to some classic mysteries as well as some newer ones.  My favorite so far has been the Girl With the Dragon Tatoo series, although I’ve also enjoyed some Wilkie Collins and Kate Morton as well.  I’ve even listened to some old classics such as Macbeth and Wuthering Heights.  As a person who enjoys hiking, I also enjoyed reading about one woman’s adventure on the Pacific Rim Trail.

I have wondered if the book I’m reading enters in to my designs in any way.  I’m not sure if the jewelry may be somewhat ‘edgier’ on days where I”m anxiously sitting on the edge of my seat to find out who was the killer or if it might turn out a bit more ‘mellow’ on days that I’m in the more mundane parts of the book.  My designs still vary from day to day depending on what I feel like creating that day.    Some days I am doing things that require too much attention to be able to listen, but other days I can lose myself in a story while my hands are working away on some new design.

I must say that it has been somewhat of a lifesaver to be able to enter into another world through the stories and take a bit of a break from reality.  While there are joys in life, there is also pain.  Sometimes being able to escape tough things in our life, even if only for a short while, can be a very good thing.  While I can’t do that all the time, I definitely appreciate the times that I can.  It can be helpful to escape into a a different world which can provide  the ‘rest’ I need in order to gain some strength and enter back into my real world to handle whatever may come my way.

Now………back to jewelry making and my latest ‘other world’.
